A few weeks ago I was able to convince my husband that we needed to make a trip to IKEA to purchase a new sofa. Ever since I saw the Ektorp sectional sofa that Melaine had, I just knew that I had to have it too. I made a special trip to IKEA just to sit on the sofa and make sure it was “the one.” Let me back up and say that while I love to shop for vintage goodies, shopping for sofas, is not my idea of fun. I was thrilled with the size, shape, and fabric on my soon to be new sofa.
Since this sofa was a sectional and much larger than our old sofa, we actually ended up renting a U-Haul to go pick it up. I have to say that buying that sofa at IKEA, getting it home and set up was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Loved it in it’s new spot. Only problem was that my coffee table which I loved, wasn’t working with this new sofa. It was long and rectangle shaped. I thought a round coffee table would be perfect and I had an idea in mind. I found a oak pedestal table on craigslist for $35.00. It looked something like this. (Sorry for the blurry pic.)
I had my hubby cut down the base and then I reattached the top, painted the base and the apron cream, gave it a little distressing, sanded and re-stained the top and voila. The perfect coffee table. I couldn’t be happier with it.
Here’s what the old sofa and coffee table looked like.
And now the new and improved sofa and coffee table.
Didn’t get the best pictures, but you get the idea. I am slowly making changes to my living room. First the sofa, then the coffee table. Next the drapes, and I want to find a cool sofa table/cabinet for behind the sofa.
Today was a crazy day filled with sewing and painting projects. Only two weeks until Farm Chicks so now the pressure is on, but I’m having fun. I’ll be back soon with some more completed projects. Hope you are having a fun weekend. We are having crazy weather here in the PNW and it has been a challenge getting my painting projects done in between rain showers.

WOW, that is a wonderful transformation! Just love your re-do of the table! Thanks for sharing!
That's darling, sweetpea! I've been trying my best to get to an Ikea in either Emeryville or Seattle and haven't yet. I want one of their slipcovers and they don't do mail order if you can believe it. I think it would fit my sofa though. I loooove yours!
xoxo,
Connie
Wow Lisa, what a difference! I love it everything looks so fresh and nice.

Lisa, the new combination looks great and very fresh! Love what you did to the table and also that you shared what you did to make the change. Thanks for the peak inside your home,
Annette
Love the Ikea Ektorp...mine is not a sectional, rather two sofas because that is what fit best in our family room. I just did a post on getting new slipcovers on Wed. for White Wed. You will not be disappointed with this sofa.
Awesome makeover on that table!! I liked your red couches/chair too, your new one gives the room a whole new look..isn't it fun! Lisa :-)
Yea! What a great transformation. Thinking out of the box!
Love your new living room, Lisa. That coffee table looks fantastic with the new sofas!
what a gorgeous transformation of your room Lisa...i am SO loving your new furniture and coffee table...bravo!!!
It looks great....my MIL cut down a table to use as a coffee table years and years ago. We also did the same with an old desk. I can't believe how many compliments we got on it. A great way to reuse and recycle. I love the Ektorp couches...I think they are so comfortable and you can't go wrong on the price either.
Such a pretty change. You did a great job on the coffee table. Your room is so pretty and inviting!
it's fabulous! The change is over the top fab!
DARLING!

Lisa,
That looks GREAT! Smart that you kept the top natural, as it ties in the vintage rug perfectly! See ya at F/C!

LOVE the coffee table! What a great transformation. I saw a great idea for a sofa table the other day on a blog. it was one of those old wood headboards with the built in shelves. Kinda cool. Good luck with your painting. Isn't this rain ridiculous!

Love your DIY redo. My kitchen table is very much like your 'before' table so I keep it covered with a vintage white tablecloth!

Ilove the coffee table, and the sofa too, although I think your old one was nice too!
Absolutely love the new look! Have almost the same table was going to have hubby cut down for me. Now I know where to get the couch. Thanks so much.
I love your finished project! There are many tables out there in the world that could be given a second life as a coffee table.
Oh my goodness, this is a great idea and project. I don't know why I didn't think to do this with an old table I had a couple of years back. Oh well, my cousins have it now. Thank you for sharing. These are great.
Susan
Hey, you know that one table would have looked really sweet behind your couch. :) hehe It was a cool piece of furniture!!
Lisa, your dad and I LOVE looking through your blog! It is always so much fun, it is like having you here telling us everything. The new couch is great, and what a GREAT table. That is what shows what a great couple you and Eric are! Love you
